Get to know our staff

Staff and their families enjoy getting to know each other at the annual New Staff Breakfast.

The year is now well underway and once again it looks to be a busy, productive and successful year for our School. However, even with the fast pace of school life, The Hutchins School places an emphasis on the value of our staff. As of this year, we will be featuring profiles of staff on the site so that other staff, parents and our wider community can get to know some of the unique and talented people we have on our staff that help create this supportive and dynamic school environment that allows boys to thrive.

We will start with profiles of our new staff, featuring two at a time.

Here are interviews with two of our new ELC teachers:

Breeony Dick, ELC Teacher

What was your previous role?  OR What have been some of your most interesting or challenging past roles?
I was working at a delightful all boys private school in Wimbledon, London for the last five years teaching Prep. I had the most wonderful time there and loved being part of their local community.

How do you think your past work or life experiences will help you in your role at Hutchins?
I have international experience and I am always open to change. I worked in a very similar environment in London and have always taken a very dedicated approach to my work. I am passionate about Early Childhood Education and pride myself on providing a nurturing, happy learning environment. I work well in a team which I think will help me fit right in at Hutchins.

What have you most appreciated during your first several weeks at Hutchins?
The support of all of the friendly staff and their willingness to help. One of the first things I noticed was how much everyone says they love their jobs at Hutchins. Now I can see why!

What is your ideal way to spend a weekend?
After being away for a while I am now keen to explore this lovely state of ours and plan to have lots of road trips. Also, I love nothing more than looking after my nephews and spending time with friends and family.

What do you think is your greatest achievement (personal or professional)?
I think having the courage to put my life in Tassie on hold and move overseas. I really had to push myself out of my comfort zone to be a relief teacher in London. Not knowing where I was going to work each day and trying to work out how to get there battling the busy tubes and maps (which is not my strong point) really tested me. However, I learnt so much by working in all of those different schools. It made me appreciate the jobs I have had since then. Having the opportunity to travel the world was an eye opening experience. I loved every minute of it!

What would people be most surprised to learn about you?
That I can fit into children's shoes. I have very small feet. If only Jimmy Choo made children sized high heels at half the price!

Leighton Beer, Physical Education Teacher (ELC K-1) & Boarding House Master

How do you think your past work or life experiences will help you in your role at Hutchins?
My past life experiences (being an Old Boy of the School) has helped me get back in touch with the life of the School and enabled me to fit in and be part of the community.

Living in shared accommodation at University has also helped the transition to Boarding House Master as I can understand what it is like for the boys and how important it is for the House to feel homely for them.

What have you most appreciated during your first several weeks at Hutchins?
The support I have received starting my role at Hutchins has been tremendous and has made the transition a very pleasant one.

The boys have also made me appreciate my role as they are so enthusiastic and keen to learn.

What is your ideal way to spend a weekend?
Getting up before the sun to spend a day on the water fishing.

What do you think is your greatest achievement (personal or professional)?
Representing Australia in youth water polo.

What would people be most surprised to learn about you?
I went to the junior world cup for U14 Aus team for Soccer.
