About the program

The first five years have so much to do with how the next 80 turn out.

William H Gates Sr (Co-Chairman of Thrive by Five)

We have designed our Leap into Learning program to be inviting and engaging for the boys who attend. We have carefully considered their stages of development and woven learning intentions into the provocations we have offered for them to explore. We know that by the time children enter school they have often already formed important attributes which can affect their ability to learn, regulate behaviour and build relationships. Therefore, we feel that by becoming involved in our Leap into Learning program we can offer an invaluable opportunity to set your child up for success as he begins his education.

Our sessions will centre on quality children’s literature. This will give parents a good chance to see how playful intentional learning experiences can simply springboard from and respond to popular picture books. The sessions also offer valuable social experiences for children where they can interact with the support of parents and teachers. Each session will include some whole group time, small group activities and individual play provocations.

Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.

Fred Rogers (Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children’s Media)

At Hutchins we have created an exciting, new and well-resourced space to maximise learning experiences for our youngest boys. The program is designed by our exceptional team of Kindergarten teachers who specialise in the education of boys. Spending time in the space will provide an opportunity for families to experience our unique learning environment tailored for boys and help parents to consider how inviting learning spaces can be created in their own homes with their son’s learning in mind.

This is an opportunity for parents to chat with an experienced early childhood teacher about the first few years of their son’s development. As teachers of young boys we understand that parent’s questions often arise about child development. Our Leap into Learning sessions are a relaxed and casual setting where you can spend time chatting with experienced teachers who can offer you some insights into the first years of school and assist you in preparing yourself and your sons for this exciting and important stage.

Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning.

The program will include gross motor, fine motor, sensory, imaginative and creative play opportunities as well as early musical, literacy and mathematical experiences. As you watch your son play the learning will be evident. Opportunities to rehearse and develop skills will be intertwined with open-ended experiences where the children can let their creativity and imaginations run wild. Parents will be encouraged to join in to support their little learners, and in doing so will be sharing ideas with our teachers that they can duplicate and revisit in their home settings.

This is a chance for parents to connect with each other. We are excited to welcome you into our school community and give you a chance to connect with other parents who have sons of a similar age. It would be easy to underestimate the power of this type of support and friendship as we all work towards giving our children the best opportunities to reach their individual potentials.
