Learn by download: Hutchins eLearning goes into "OverDrive"

Monday, 1 August 2011

Andrew Jones and Broden Balsley-Polley enjoy the benefits of the OverDrive service.

Hutchins staff and students can now download ebooks, audiobooks, videos and music for personalised learning.

The Hutchins School's Digital Library - http://hutchins.lib.overdrive.com -  has gone live this month using OverDrive's School Download Library - http://www.overdrive.com. The service is an important part of the Library's contribution to the School's vision to be a "school of the future in using 21st century tools and e-learning strategies to engage and empower all students, staff and its wider community".

This has been achivieved using the Australian Academic and Research Network (AARNet), which provides high speed broadband internet services. OverDrive delivers a 24/7 service for a whole school community and allows those students, staff and parents who do not have easy access to public library services, or are off campus to use the service.

Using the service also encourages good digital citizenship, with those engaged in using the service understanding the digital rights management in the publishing, film, and music industries.

The use of eReaders and other devices are explained on the OverDrive site http://www.overdrive.com.au, in the guide http://overdrive.com/files/ebook-cheat-sheet.pdf and on the Hutchins Intranet http://apollo.hutchins.tas.edu.au/community/digital_library/default.aspx.
