Netting system project helps keep salmon industry afloat

Aquaculture is a key industry for Tasmania, and Old Boy Peter Bender (’76) is helping to ensure its continued success. Peter has been overseeing the construction of the world’s first salmon protection pen at the Hideaway Bay farm in Tasmania’s south.

The system is aimed at protecting the salmon from fur seals and other predators. The technology allows for in situ net cleaning, reducing the need for anti-fouling agents, and is made of a lightweight synthetic fibre similar to that used for creating bullet-proof vests.

Huon aquaculture produces more than 14,000 tonnes of salmon each year.
