The Hutchins School welcomes International Students

Our School community celebrates cultural diversity and enjoys global networking opportunities.  The HutchinsSchool is an Anglican day and boarding school for boys and currently our boarding house Burbury House is home to students from 12 different countries around the World.  We provide downloadable information documents to further explain aspects of The Hutchins School so that you can make an informed decision but ask that you read on so that you understand a little more about us and our location.  Our location provides a focused, supportive, safe and caring environment for all students.  Our international students who reside on campus as boarding students are fully supervised and provided daily tutoring support and guidance under a specialised program.

Why Hutchins?

We believe, and we are sure that parents will agree, that it is important for students (especially of high-school age) to remain focused on their intial goals and their reasons for choosing to study in Australia.  For most, their goal is to gain positive academic outcomes which allow them to enter a leading university, either in Australia or back in their own Country.  Your decision therefore, to explore the possibility of an education provided by The Hutchins School located in Hobart, Tasmania, is a very wise choice!

Hutchins has been a leading school for boys since 1846 and has an oustanding academic, sporting and performing arts reputation in Australia.  In the latest results, the highest university entry score for Tasmania was achieved by a Hutchins boy and the School is proudly recognised in the top 10% of schools Australia-wide.  Hutchins is the oldest continually operating school for boys in Australia!  Our school environment encourages fun and is 100% supportive yet has a disciplined and structured curriculum that promotes a learning environment conducisive to excellent academic outcomes.   Beyond the core subjects of science, english, mathematics and SOSE, there are elective subjects ranging from creative and performing arts, audio/visual and design/technology through to robotics, sport science, psychology/sociology, architecture, economics, accounting, business management and numerous more (building to around 100 choices by Years 11 and 12) plus a variety of language options.  English as a Second Language (ESL) is included in our curriculum and fees.

For those students who love sport they will be more than satisfied with what is offered by Hutchins.   Hutchins has enjoyed many successes at local, state and national levels.

Our brochures and information documents - listed below (which you can download) provides you more in-depth information.

Why Hobart, Tasmania?

Hobart is considered one of Australia's prettiest cities.  Tasmania is recognised worldwide as being one of the many beautiful sightseeing destinations of the World and with some of the freshest, cleanest air in the World.

Hobart offers a safe, supportive community.  Students are able to remain focused on their studies and goals without the distractions found in the larger cities of Australia.  The fact that Hobart is a smaller city means it is easier to get around, does not have massive crowds, has a relaxed and very friendly atmosphere and is a healthy-living, fresh environment.  Many interesting and fun adventures and attractions are easily accessible.   Tasmania offers young students a positive environment and families can feel content knowing it is a safe environment.  Being a smaller city also means less concentrated volumes of international students from any one country.  This is a positive when it comes to integrating into a community and for learning English.

Hobart is a capital city of Australia and therefore offers all the facilities of a capital city.  The mountains meet the ocean providing you many outdoor sporting and recreational choices and there are many untouched parts of Tasmania that are environmentally protected to ensure it remains a pristine environment.  Our international student support program includes many excursions to explore the wonders of Tasmania and all it has to offer.

The HutchinsSchool provides academic pathways to university and other tertiary choices.

Successful integration into our Hutchins community is taken very seriously at Hutchins and as such we have student leaders, led by senior staff, who have the sole responsibility of ensuring our international students are being supported as they settle into a new culture and new friendships.  The School promotes high academic standards, sound moral values and strong sporting, cultural and community achievements.

Application and Process

To apply for a place at Hutchins, all International students must submit an Application Form (you can download this form below) and copies of school reports.  The School may then request an english assessment test.  Based on these documents Hutchins may then issue an Offer of Place.  Below we have also provided you with links to our prospectus, boarders' handbook and a publication which provides additional information specifically for international students.  Should you wish specific information about each of our four mini schools i.e. Early Learning, Junior, Middle or Senior schools then you can further browse the relevant menus on our website.

Luke Chik - Hong Kong

(Hutchins student from Year 8, 2003 until Year 12, 2007)

Luke Chik

My last five years at Hutchins have been packed with numerous opportunities and left me with many joyful memories. When I first came, I noticed that Hobart was very different from Hong Kong, that the way people live, what they eat and what they do everyday were not the same. Also, living in the Boarding House was a big challenge for me at first but the friendly atmosphere and the sense of one community bonded us together. I soon got over the initial fright and became part of the family. I was able to adjust myself to the "Tasmanian mood", which was being friendly, active and open minded. I couldn't have done these without the help from the friendly staff and students at Hutchins.

Hutchins is truly a "GreatSchool for Boys". Being at Hutchins is about having life long friendships, learning new skills and having fun. Throughout my five year journey of Hutchins, the school opened up many opportunities to me such as the chances to lead at school and in the Boarding House. The school also offers a wide range of subjects and sport choices, outdoor activities and weekend curriculums as well as their excellent facilities such as their gymnasium, libraries, computer labs, sporting fields, large open space, school tuck shop, music school, chapel etc, which are all very well equipped. We all love and enjoy using them as parts of our schooling programs.

Hutchins is the right school for those who are willing to learn and to try different things. At the end of the day, being a Hutchins boy is about taking up opportunities, taking on challenges and being happy.

Martin Coisnon - France

(Hutchins Senior International French Student)

Marin CoisnonI traveled from France to improve my English at an Australian school. I have been a part of Hutchins for seventy days and I think it is an extraordinary school.

Hutchins is set in a beautiful environment; it's a pleasure every morning to admire the Derwent River and Mount Wellington as I walk to school from the boarding house. Hutchins has everything to help its students study well and contribute to developing their character and values. There are many modern buildings and high-tech facilities for studying that make learning fun and inter-active.

The Hutchins community has been very friendly. There have always been people to help me, whether it be staff or students. I have discovered that schooling in Australia is considered very important and I have also come to know that friendship and teamwork play an important role in this.

At Hutchins, all of this is put together to create excellent schooling.
