Designing their future: Old Boys in running for national award

One of the recent projects completed by Old Boys Alec Balcombe ('07) and Dave Houbaer ('07) is the redesign of the inside of a sustainable food store in Lindisfarne.

Two of our Hutchins Old Boys, Alec Balcombe (’07) and Dave Houbaer (’07) have been shortlisted for a national design competition.

Alec and Dave began their design practise, Dhab Studios, after completing their qualifications in Environmental Design.

They have been shortlisted in the Launchpad design competition for their “Eco Light” design  – a cardboard pendant lightshade produced from waste cardboard.

Alec says he and Dave have worked hard to establish themselves in the local market.

“When we moved to Hobart after completing our University studies, we focused on contacting industry leaders and focused on meeting people and getting a name for ourselves.”

The pair have just completed an interior design project for a sustainable food store in Lindisfarne.

“The plan is to continue to expand into the mainland market,” he said.

Alec says they were inspired by Hutchins teacher, Tom Turbett, to pursue this career path.

We have opened a design practise that focuses on interiors through to object furniture and lighting.
