Tasmania Over Five Generations: Return to Van Diemen's Land?

John Biggs (’51) has recently published Tasmania Over Five Generations: Return to Van Diemen’s Land? He traces Tasmania’s social and political progress as seen through the eyes of five father-son generations, starting with Abraham Biggs who arrived in 1833. The Hutchins School gets several mentions: Abraham’s great-grandson Oscar taught at Hutchins for 27 years and his son John (the author) spent his entire school career there. After 40 years abroad, John returned to Tasmania to find that much had changed – Hutchins certainly had – but that much had not.

John’s most recent publication is called Towards Forgiveness: Sino-Tasmanian Stories From Two Islands. He has very kindly donated copies of both books to The Hutchins School Archives and Heritage Collection.
