The Hutchins Old Boys' Lodge is the only Old Boys’ Lodge in Tasmania. It is thought of as one of the Old Boys’ most exclusive groups and provides worldwide acceptance of members, which is a great treat when travelling. When the Lodge was started 92 years ago, membership was by strict invitation only, however today anyone of a good character can apply to join and this can be very rewarding for them. Their main purpose is to make good men better, which is a continuation of the School’s belief.

Rev Lee was interested to discover during the lunch that it was also the School Chaplain, Rev D B Blackwood who was the first initiate into the Lodge back in 1927 and remained a life time member and went on to become Bishop Blackwood of Tasmania later in his career.

Old Boys’ ties to the Lodge were also evident when a Lodge member told a story of an Old Boy, who’s step father is to be Master of another Lodge (and normally he would join that Lodge) said ‘I want to join freemasonry, but not your Lodge, the only Lodge I will join is the Hutchins Old Boys’ Lodge No 48 T.C.’ His step father kindly proposed him into the Hutchins Lodge.

The Commencement Lunch was a highly successful function and the Lodge thanks the Community Relations Team who created a wonderful ambience and the School’s chef who created a thoroughly enjoyable meal for the guests.
