High profile physicist visits Hutchins

Professor Peter Noel Johnston addresses an audience of keen young physicists.

Physics and Chemistry students and teachers have been treated to a lecture by renowned Australian Physicist Professor Peter Noel Johnston.

Professor Johnston's lecture addressed the consequences of damage to the Dai-chi Nuclear Power Plant in Fukushima, Japan caused by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck the north-east coast of Honshu on 11 March this year. In particular, Professor Johnston talked to students about the dangers of failure to restore active cooling in such emergencies.

The lecture touched on elements of coursework for many of the Hutchins students.

The Hutchins School also welcomed a group of senior science students from Guilford Young College to the lecture.

Professor Johnston has published over 100 international refereed journal papers on beam physics, environmental radioactivity, health physics and medical physics and has been a member of a number of national and international bodies concerned with nuclear and radiation safety. Professor Johnston currently lectures at RMIT University.
