ELC students show real 'heart'

ELC helps out at World Heart Day

Students from the Hutchins Early Learning Centre recently participated in a thanksgiving and ‘heart planting’ service at St David’s Cathedral to help raise awareness about heart disease.

Hundreds of ‘hearts for hope’ were planted by Tasmanian Kindergarten students and Premier Lara Giddings to represent a healthier future for Tasmanian children.

“Almost a quarter of Tasmanian children are now overweight or obese which in itself increases their risk of heart disease in adulthood,” said the Heart Foundation’s Tasmanian CEO Graeme Lynch.

“On top of that, this research suggests that obese children already have high blood pressure and cholesterol, conditions that we normally wouldn’t expect to start seeing until people are in their 40s or 50s” he said.

The Hutchins students enjoyed the event, and it is hoped their enthusiastic participation helped spread the message about the importance of heart health.
